The overall goal of the program is to provide youth with social, emotional and academic support to prepare them to enter high school. To accomplish this, we work to understand and identify the specific factors or circumstances that put these students at risk. We apply best practice models of service delivery and develop a plan to address the strengths and needs of the youth as well as their family. E3 Michigan, in collaboration with Lakes Area Community Coalition, will incorporate family sessions, family activities, group session and academic support to strengthen the family unit.

Family Activities

Creating opportunities for family engagement is important for multiple reasons. Firstly, it builds self-esteem in children. Children who feel connected to their parents demonstrate a greater sense of self and self-value. Secondly, family activities strengthen family bonds and generate feelings of belonging. When children have a strong sense of familial belonging, they are less likely to seek to belong in negative places. Thirdly, it fosters positive behaviors. Research shows that children who spend quality time with parents are less likely to become involved in drugs, alcohol, and other illicit activities. The family unit becomes a greater influence than negative outside forces. To this end, children are much more likely to develop emotional and behavioral disorders when they receive inadequate, poor parenting, or absent parenting. Therefore, it is our intent to re-establish or fortify these family bonds in an effort create optimal environments for the child to grow and develop.
